Currywurst - German Street Food
Currywurst is a popular German fast food dish that consists of steamed, then fried pork sausage that is sliced and topped with a flavorful ketchup sauce mixed with curry powder. This unique combination of savory sausage and sweet curry-kissed sauce has been a favorite snack among locals and visitors alike for decades. Whether enjoyed as a quick bite on the go or as a sit-down meal with fries, currywurst never fails to satisfy those craving a hearty and flavorful treat. Its origins can be traced back to post-World War II Berlin, where it was created by Herta Heuwer in 1949, and since then, it has become a staple of German street food culture.
Ingredients:
- 4 bratwurst sausages
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon curry powder
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Begin by preparing the curry sauce. In a saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until they become soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Once the onion and garlic are softened, add the curry powder and paprika to the saucepan. Stir well to combine and let the spices toast for about a minute, releasing their flavors.
- Next, pour in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar, stirring until all ingredients are well combined. Allow the sauce to simmer over low heat for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- While the curry sauce is simmering, cook the bratwurst sausages. You can grill them, pan-fry them, or cook them according to your preference until they are fully cooked and have a nice golden-brown color.
- Once the sausages are cooked, transfer them to a cutting board and slice them into bite-sized pieces.
- To serve, place the sliced bratwurst onto a plate or a serving dish, and generously spoon the warm curry sauce over the top. If desired, sprinkle a little extra curry powder on top for garnish.
- Serve the Currywurst immediately while it's still hot, along with some crusty bread or French fries on the side for dipping into the delicious curry sauce.
